Understanding Low Vision
Low vision is a permanent condition – one that glasses, contacts, medication, or surgery cannot fully correct. Unlike blindness, usable vision remains; but it’s compromised in ways that are often unpredictable and deeply personal. It may appear as a persistent blur, a narrowed tunnel of sight, dark or missing patches of sight, or a sensitivity to light that makes even bright days difficult to navigate.
In the Mahoning Valley, thousands are living with low vision and many are doing so without support, tools, or guidance. Access to specialized low vision care – the kind that goes beyond a standard eye exam and actually addresses how a person functions in their daily life – is limited in our region. That gap has real consequences. A child who cannot see clearly may fall behind in school and never understand why. An older adult who can no longer drive may withdraw from the community and lose their independence. A working-age adult with unaddressed vision loss may leave the workforce entirely. These are not rare stories – they are happening across our communities every day.
